Leaves From My Family Tree

Sources -- Doty Family

Edward Doty

Edward Doty's arrival in America on the Mayflower in 1620 has always been a part of our Family Tradition. The first time I saw a reference to Edward Doty in print was the book "Finding Your Roots" by Jeane Eddy Westin. You can imagine my excitement when I found a published connection to our Family Tradition!

Since that time, I have discovered other print souces, including "The Doty-Doten Family in America -- Descendants of Edward Doty, An Emigrant by the Mayflower, 1620", compiled by Ethan Allen Doty, published 1897.

Ethan Allen Doty's book assigns numbers to the Edward Doty descendants, and my ancestors are listed in the book as far down as my great grandmother, Martha Etta Doty.

An excellent place to learn about the Mayflower and it's passengers is at Caleb Johnson's Mayflower Web Pages.

Aaron Doty

Birth
8 January, 1836 -- My source for Aaron's birth is "The Doty-Doten Family in America". He is #4829 in the book, and is listed as being born in Buffalo Grove, Illinois.

My grandmother (Aaron's grand-daughter) listes his birth year as 1833.

There are several Internet references to his birth, and they pretty much all have the 1836 date.

His birth place is listed as Illinois on daughter Martha's death certificate.

Marriage
1860 -- Source is "The Doty-Doten Family in America".

Civil War
There are several Internet references to Aaron Doty's service in the 32nd Iowa Infantry.
I own a letter, dated 21-22 September 1862, that he sent home from his barracks. The text of the letter is included in this site.

Death
My grandmother lists his death as being in 1905.
Until I can do my own research, I am inclined to go with the 4 June 1908 date I have found on the Internet in the Iowa Cemetery Records and the Iowa Union Soldier Burial Records.

Hannah Amanda Talbott Doty

Birth
My souce is "The Doty-Doten Family in America". It reads "Hannah Amanda Talbott, b. there (Pollo Ill.) March 26, 1836, dau. James Talbott and his wife, Sarah."

On her daughter Martha's death certificate, her birth place is listed as Illinois.

Marriage
My souce is "The Doty-Doten Family in America".

She is identified as marrying "Doty" on a really old Talbott family tree that is in my possession.

Death
I am fairly certain that she was living in about 1897, because that's when the Doty/Doten book was published.

I have no idea where my grandmother's date of 1905 came from. She has the same birth and death years for both Aaron and Hannah, so I think there may be an error someplace.

Martha Etta Doty Brown

Birth
26 October 1865, Butler Co., Iowa -- "The Doty-Doten Family in America". She is #6202.

26 October 1865, Iowa -- Death Certificate -- Washington State, Yakima County, 1915, Record number 481.

"Clarkvill, Iowa" -- Her daughter Mildred's birth certificate. (I am assuming that this is "Clarksville, Butler Co., Iowa")

Marriage
My Grandmother gave me a photocopy of her parents' "Certificed Copy of Marriage License".
They were married 12 August 1897 in Brule Co., South Dakota.
The witnesses were Aaron Doty of Kimball, South Dakota and H.A. Doty of Kimball, South Dakota.
The marriage was performed by Harlan P. Carson, a family friend.

Death
8 December 1915 -- Death Certificate -- Washington State, Yakima County, 1915, Record number 481.
